(first ‘leg’) Asheville, NC to Lake Barkley, Ky
Monday, Sept 13 – twenty-ten
Its really not a big deal, just a destination a little further away from the Carolina’s and home (California) but one that has lingered in mind all summer and if the truth be known maybe even a career of thirty something years.
A lot too has to do with the lack of encumbrance, how often is it that a ‘worker-ant’ (that’s been my role) can take off without a schedule? plus the additional ‘eco-friendly hobby of kayaking which now adds a little value to the time spent along the way. I’d love to think that I could drive one day and paddle the next while checking out some ‘junk’ stores along the way – a simple pace, we’ll see how it goes.
Kim’s been great about it all “just go!” she says, then maybe she has a big party planned in my absence – I say go for it Kim…. In a few weeks she will fly out to San Diego where we will spend a few days with my son before continuing to Northern California and the Asti Winery for a nieces wedding, a special day for them. From there Kim will return to work (sorry) while I explore the world on the way back with a stop at Lake Tahoe before a 37-mile Gunnison River paddle in Colorado a few days later – then it will be how well I adapt to the approaching winter as to any further paddling plans..
But for the most part I hope to post something simple every couple of days to keep those interested with what they normally ‘fly-over’ – kinda like a ten-cent tour but less eight cents. I still get into the traveling ‘frenzy’ on occasion but will strive for the bac-roads as I get further west and they seem to be headed in the right direction – it’s all pretty simple.
‘First leg’ – Asheville, NC to Lake Barkley, Ky. should be an easy drive in comparison to how I’ve driven all my life, this first ‘leg’ will be a little more than 400 miles leaving me in a situation with the possibility to paddle the next day. It’s likely that I won’t paddle much of Lake Barkley (if any) because of its size (58000 acres) but if my interest get stirred, who knows – if not I’ll move on to the next ‘leg’ and a 30-mile overnight paddle along the Current River in the Ozarks of Missouri..
